Scouting: Cathedral Tour & Priest Ordination Mass

**This Event Will Fulfill Several Ad Altare Dei Requirements**

All Scouts and adults are invited to take an in-depth tour of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, the home church of the Richmond Diocese. The tour will provide both fascinating history and a wonderful exhibition of our faith in our beautiful cathedral. Following the tour, Scouts will attend the Ordination Mass where three deacons will be ordained into holy orders as priests. The Ordination Mass will be an impressive and moving faith experience for all who attend. After the Ordination Mass, Scouts and their parents will enjoy a pizza lunch in the Cathedral courtyard adjacent to the Cathedral. During lunch, Father Matt Kiehl, Chaplain to Scouting for the Central/Western Vicariate, will lead a discussion with the Scouts that will fulfill several requirements of the Ad Altare Dei Religious Emblems Award.

What are the Ad Altare Dei requirements that are met by this event?

The Ad Altare Dei requirements that will be completed are in Chapter 7 of the manual:

  • 1: Attend an ordination; discuss what you saw; What kind of commitment is expressed through the vows and receiving a stole?
  • 2: Discuss with a priest what was meaningful in the Sacrament of Holy Orders? Why did you feel called to priesthood? How do you help the church as a priest?
  • 3: Read 1 Tim 3:8-13 and discuss how Holy Orders helps a priest/deacon grow in Christ’s love. Discuss how Orders helps a priest live his Christian commitment, and any conflict with society’s pressures.

Where is the Cathedral located?

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is located at 800 S Cathedral Pl, Richmond, Virginia. Please meet in front of the Cathedral on the plaza or just inside the Cathedral doors if the weather is not hospitable.

Where do I park?

Though street parking is available on the weekends, it is very limited when the Cathedral has large events like an Ordination Mass. If street parking is not available, please use the VCU parking garage located a few blocks down on Main Street. There are entrances off both Cherry Street and Laurel Street to enter the garage. There may be a small fee to park in the garage, but often this is waived for Cathedral events.

What is the schedule for the day?

Please meet at 9:00 am in front of the Cathedral on the plaza or just inside the Cathedral doors if the weather is not hospitable (give yourself about 15-20 extra minutes to find parking and walk to the Cathedral). The tour will begin at 9:15 am and will conclude in time to be seated for the Ordination Mass that begins at 10:30 am (seating will be reserved for those attending the tour). The Ordination Mass will conclude between 12:00-12:30 pm, after which the Scouts and parents will proceed to the courtyard for lunch and the discussion session with Father Matt Kiehl. The discussion will conclude by 1:30pm.

Where does the meeting take place following the Mass?

After Mass ends, scouts and parents will have 15 minutes to make their way to the courtyard. From the sanctuary, head toward the altar and to the left hallway. Go through the hallway and exit the doors to arrive at the courtyard.

What is the dress mode for this event?

Full Scout uniforms are required, including dress shoes as we will be attending Mass. Please wear the same full uniform you would wear to a Court of Honor.
