What is Quo Vadis?
“Quo Vadis” is a Latin phrase that refers to the tradition of St. Peter departing the City of Rome amidst persecution, according to the story, he meets Our Lord along the way (today the spot is marked by the Church Domine Quo Vadis, along the Appian Way, just outside the City of Rome. It refers to the question posed by St. Peter, as he sees Him head toward the City. “Lord, where are You going?” The Lord is of course headed to Rome. The Lord responds, “I’m headed to Rome to be crucified a second time.” St. Peter then turns and heads to his death, eventually to be crucified upside-down, following an acclamation that he was unworthy to die a martyr’s death in the same way as Our Lord.

The opportunity brings rising 10th graders – 12th graders together, along with priests, youth ministers and seminarians for fellowship and opportunities to draw close to Our Lord.

Does this mean the men must sign up for seminary?
No. This is a time for young men to embrace their faith and spend a little time with one another and the Lord. This is a helpful time for young men to spend a little casual time with seminarians and priests to reflect on how the Lord calls men to the altar.

Who should attend Quo Vadis?
Quo Vadis is open to all rising 10th graders through graduated seniors. Due to the nature of the retreat experience, we cannot accept any individual who is younger than 10th grade.

Most importantly, pastors and youth ministry leaders should identify young men who are well-rounded and active in the life of the parish to participate in this experience. They should be invited through one-on-one invitations.

Where and when is the Quo Vadis Day Gathering?
Quo Vadis will be held on Friday, July 16, 2021 through Saturday, July 17th at Claytor Lake State Park, Dublin, and a separate opportunity on Friday, July 30th – Saturday, July 31st at First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach.

This is an overnight camping experience that will involve the celebration of Mass, other prayer opportunities, fellowship, and outdoor recreation. Youth must bring their own tent, sleeping bag and necessary overnight gear. Youth are welcome to sign up for either event. Space is limited.

Who leads the Quo Vadis experience?
Quo Vadis is a joint effort by the Office for Evangelization and Office for Vocations. Activities will be led by the Vicar for Vocations, seminarians, and youth ministers of the diocese. Due to the nature of the retreat experience, parishes are not asked to send a chaperone with the youth they send to the retreat.
