Breakout Sessions

Saint Augustine and the Virtue of Courage – 2:00 p.m., B14

St. Augustine provides a timely approach to navigating the difficulties of the present day in the way that he approaches Christin life, the virtues in general and courage in particular. Join Fr. Brian Capuano in a reflection on how to dynamically approach this necessary virtue in discipleship today. Fr. Brian Capuano is the Judicial Vicar & Chancellor of the Diocese and Pastor of the Pro-Cathedral of Saint Peter, Richmond; Saint Patrick, Richmond, and Saint John, Highland Springs.

Courage, Hope and The Next Right Thing – 2:00 p.m., B21A

Fear is our natural response to danger and suffering, yet Jesus is calling each of us to an unnatural—or rather a supernatural—courage in the face of this life’s endless challenges. Together we will learn what Godly courage is, why we need it, and how we get more of it. Richard Girardin has a master’s degree in philosophy from Franciscan University and currently teaches courses in philosophy. He worked in campus ministry for 7 years. He lives in North Carolina with his wife Jessie and 3 children.

Faith and Science at Work – 2:00 p.m., E10A

Mia will speak about how her Catholic faith informs her world view as a research scientist. She will share about how faith and science are complementary from an experiential perspective. Mia Siochi is a research materials engineer in the Advanced Materials & Processing Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. She is a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport News.

Through the Raging Storm… Be not afraid! – 2:00 p.m., B21C

St. John Bosco shares with young people a dream he had. Through a storm, there are 2 things that matters as long as you anchor yourself in them. “Trust in Jesus in the Eucharist and in Mary, you will see what miracles are.” – St. John Bosco Sr. Elfie was born in Nigeria & raised in the Philippines. She worked with children with special needs before entering the convent. She is the Vocation & VIDES director in Eastern USA. VIDES is a domestic & international missionary volunteer program of the Salesian Sisters, present in 97 nations.

Entering Into the Unknown with Radical Trust and Prudent Courage – 2:00 p.m., E10B

Utilizing insights from theology, philosophy, and psychology, this talk will address what it means to trust Christ radically and act with prudent courage as humans experiencing uncertainty, anxiety, fear, and doubt on a daily basis. Maura McFadden, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia and DC. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology at Divine Mercy University in 2021. She specializes in college mental health and currently works as a staff psychologist at American University Center for Well-Being.

Your Great Commission: Evangelizing Where You Are – 4:00 p.m., E10B

Jesus has reserved a part of His ministry for your hands and feet. How do you live your Great Commission? This breakout will give you practical tools to help win souls for Christ within your sphere of influence, as we discuss boldly sharing the joy of the Gospel without being … weird. Cate Harmeyer has served in ministry in the Diocese of Richmond for almost 20 years. She teaches high school theology, and has served as the Campus Minister of Catholic High School and Christopher Newport University. Currently, she is educating her brightest students yet – her two daughters.

Storytelling for the Lord: Using your writing to share His love – 4:00 p.m., B21C

In this talk, we will explore how God uses storytelling to connect His people. Through fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, and other genres, telling the human story helps us relate to each other. There will also be a Q&A to ask anything about the writing and publishing process. Camille Di Maio is the bestselling author of nine novels, and she is working on her tenth. Inspired by her travels, she writes secular historical fiction that is informed by her Catholic faith. She uses her social media platform to quietly evangelize while also spreading her love of all things books.

Be Courageous! Receive the Mercy of God! – 4:00 p.m., B14

Jesus is mercy itself and wants everyone to receive his merciful forgiveness. But often we put up barriers, thinking we are not good enough, not worthy to receive his love and mercy. Here we will talk about being courageously open to God’s mercy, especially in the sacrament of confession. Fr. John David Ramsey was born and raised in the United Methodist Church before entering into the communion of the Catholic Church in 2000. He was ordained a priest in 2010, and currently serves as Pastor of St. Benedict Parish in Richmond. He loves young people!

Gaming for God – 4:00 p.m., E10D

Can our hobbies actually enrich our prayer and reflection? Join Victoria as she reflects on how playing video games has impacted her understanding of God’s love and the spiritual life, and how God can transform our hobbies from mere escapes to something more. Victoria Garcia-Nicoud is the campus minister at William and Mary. After graduating from CNU in 2019, Victoria spent two years at Virginia Tech working as a campus ministry intern. She recently married her husband, Will, this past September and enjoys writing in her free time.

The Courage to Build Community – 4:00 p.m., E10A

Bring a friend and dive deeper into building intentional community by hearing some pointers for fostering a good community in small groups and then putting those pointers immediately into practice. The skills you learn in small groups and in your small faith communities in college will impact you for the rest of your life. Lean in and let the Lord speak to you as you encourage one another in your lives of faith.

Our speaker is Kieran Koch.
