Adolescent Catechesis Initiative

For Youth Ministers, DREs, and Pastors

It should also be remembered that the most successful catechesis is that which is given in the context of the wider pastoral care of young people, especially when it addresses the problems affecting their lives. Hence, catechesis should be integrated with certain procedures, such as analysis of situations, attention to human sciences and education, the co-operation of the laity and of young people themselves.

from the General Directory for Catechesis #184

The Office for Evangelization of Youth and Young Adults is responsible for promoting adolescent catechesis for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. In the context of youth ministry within our diocese, adolescent catechesis supports parish catechetical ministry for youth in grades 9 to 12.

Each parish is encouraged to have a systematic 4-year adolescent catechetical curriculum from grades 9 to 12 based on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) document entitled Doctrinal Elements for a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age.

Below is a list of available curriculums that are written to follow the USCCBs Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age or Adaptation. While we have made an effort to include all of the major publishers, this is not a comprehensive list. It is meant as a starting place and helpful resource. Some of the publishers listed below have books or curriculums that cover each course in its entirety. Some have many sessions that put together could be used to cover a course. Some publishers have items for each of the courses in the Framework; some publishers only have a few covered (at this point). Note that things could and may change from the time of this documents publication, so do your research.
